Feast day, 19 August. This Arnulf (Arnoul) passed his earlier life at the
court of Theodebert II, king of Austrasia; through the marriage of his
elder son with a daughter of Pepin of Landen (St. Begga), he became an
ancestor of the Carolingian dynasty. At the age of thirty, he wanted to
retire from public life, but instead in 614 he was chosen Bishop of Metz,
though still a layman. He continued to act as adviser to King Chlotar II,
whom he had helped to the Frankish throne, and was tutor to his son Dagobert.
Arnulf made further attempts to resign his offices, but it was not till 629
that he was able to retire to the Vosges mountains. Here his friend St.
Romaric had preceded him and begun the monastic community at Habend that was later called Remiremont. St. Arnulf settled near by, and lived there till
his death twelve years later.

Yoursource may have confused her with a Bilichild, sometiimes said to be adaughter of Clovis, sometimes Clothar I, who is mentioned as a ancestorof Arnulf o of Metz by Paul the Deacon in the late 8th century in his'Deeds of the bps of Metz'. The genealogiia domus Carolingiae (c.850) mentions Ansbert _de genere senatorum_ as the grandfather of Arnulf. TThese details postdate the Carolingian deposition of the Merovingiansin 751, and are usually regardrded by historians as wishful thinkingintended to legitimise the dynastic succession, and establishh a false continuity. However I notice that one current Dark Age historian at london University, GuGuy Halsall in a recent book (Settlement and Social Organisation: the region of Metz, CUP 1995) seeemed to accept the tradition that Arnold and Arnulf were related to the Merovingian royal family.> > Any historical mention I find of Bertha relates to her marriage > to Aethelstan, King of Kent.Th.This is quite correct: there is a discussion of this in 'the originsof the anglo-saxon kingdoms' S' S.Bassett, 1989, and 'kings andkingdoms in anglo-saxon England' B.Yorke, 1990, both fine books.> > Conceivably Ausbert could have died and she > remarried. The strange thing would be leaving Arnololdus behind in Saxony.Quite right. But I think that the tradition that connects Arnold and his famfamily to Saxony only dates from even later - 11th or 12th century: perhaps becos the Ottonians camme from there. Both Arnold and Arnulfwere bishops of Metz.> This heritage must be shared by milliolions of us. Can anyone shed > any light on how Bertha managed her domestic affairs?> >

Arnulf OF METZ, SAINT,

French SAINT ARNOUL DE METZ (b. c. 580, near Nancy [France]--d. July 18, 640?, Remiremont; feast day August 16 or 19), bishop of Metz and, with Pepin I, the earliest known ancestor of Charlemagne.

A Frankish noble, Arnulf gave distinguished service at the Austrasian court under Theudebert II (595-612). In 613, however, with Pepin, he led the aristocratic opposition to Brunhild that led to her downfall and to the reunification of Frankish lands under Chlotar II. About the same year, he became bishop.

From 623, again with Pepin, now mayor of the Austrasian palace, Arnulf was adviser to Dagobert I, before retiring (629?) to become a hermit. Arnulf's son Ansegisel married Pepin's daughter Begga; the son of this marriage, Pepin II, was Charlemagne's great-grandfather.
